Livingstone College is a private historically black college that is secured by a strong commitment to quality instruction, academic excellence and student success. Through a Christian-based environment suitable for holistic learning, Livingstone provides excellent business, liberal arts, STEAM, teacher education and workforce development programs for students from all ethnic backgrounds designed to promote lifelong learning, and to develop student potential for leadership and service to a global community.

Livingstone loves cheering on the Blue Bears and their 12 CIAA Division 2 varsity sports. Members of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Conference USA, the Blue Bears boast some of the nation’s finest facilities and compete against the CIAA’s top competition.

Did you know?


The first black intercollegiate football game played in America happened on the front lawn of Livingstone College on Dec. 27, 1892, in a matchup against Biddle Memorial Institute, which is now Johnson C. Smith University.

Livingstone College produced the first African‑American neurosurgeon in the United States (Carter Fuller); the first African‑American President of the National Education Association (Elizabeth Duncan Koontz); the first African-American mayor of the City of Salisbury, N.C. (Wiley L. Nash); and the first African-American mayor of Spartanburg, S.C. (James Talley).

Exploring Salisbury

Livingstone College is located in Salisbury, North Carolina, only 43 miles from Charlotte. Salisbury is home to the famed North Carolina soft drink, Cheerwine; grocery food store chain Food Lion; and the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.
