Welcome to the webpage of Livingstone College's Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP). The QEP, entitled "Write for Life,” is a campuswide initiative that underscores how the College can best serve today's Livingstone College student. Our goal with this QEP is to foster in students the capacity and desire to write well in their chosen disciplines. By improving student awareness of clarity, context, and coherence in their written work, we help students prepare to "Write for Life" in the 21st century.”

The Livingstone College QEP focuses on the improvement of writing that:

Includes a process identifying key issues emerging from institutional assessment;
Focuses on learning outcomes and/or the environment supporting student learning and accomplishing the mission of the institution;
Demonstrates institutional capability for the implementation and completion of the QEP;
Includes broad-based participation of institutional constituencies in the development and proposed implementation of the QEP; and
Identifies goals and a plan to assess their achievement.
The QEP covers a five-year period (2015-2020), during which time institutional assessments will be conducted addressing students’ performances, to establish if learning outcomes leading to writing improvements are being achieved. This action is in accordance with Section 2.12 of the Core Requirements for reaffirmation of accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).

FAQs

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) require that its member institutions develop a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) in order to be reaffirmed for accreditation at the institution's decennial review. The QEP is a document that recognizes keys issues identified by institutional assessment which focuses on addressing an academic need for the institution that would lead to an improved performance of students. Furthermore, the QEP must have measurable student learning outcomes that are aimed at accomplishing the institution's mission. Also, the institution must include both a means of assessing its progress and offer evidence that the college has the capability of realizing its goals and prove its capability to initiate, implement and complete the QEP.

"Write for Life" is a campuswide initiative that underscores how Livingstone College can best serve its students. Our goal with this QEP is to foster in students the capacity and desire to write well in their chosen disciplines, thus preparing them to “Write for Life” in the 21st century.

Writing in the Disciplines equips students with essential communication skills that can enhance their academic success and facilitate their career readiness. By teaching students the genre conventions of a particular discipline – language, citation style, organization, tone, etc. -- students are prepared to be effective communicators in the fields of their choice and in the world beyond college.

“Write for Life” improves students’ writing and as a result their critical thinking and communication skills. Strong writing skills ultimately contribute to better grades and increased self-confidence. Moreover, writing -- with its attention to audience awareness, flow, and clarity -- prepares students for success beyond college since such skills are transferable to graduate school and are necessary for participation in civil society and the professions.

“Write for Life” draws from the expertise of each faculty member in their chosen discipline. It provides them with an opportunity to reflect on their own discipline-specific writing expectations and facilitate student understanding of the course material even as faculty develop increased empathy for those they teach. It also allows faculty to create a sense of connection to and collaboration with colleagues across disciplines and can ultimately contribute to enhancements in writing skills – be it in research or other professional contexts.
